Here’s something special about September in Sonoma County. The mornings start getting a little cooler, harvest season is underway, and we get that perfect stretch of weather that still feels like summer—with just a hint of fall around the corner.
Whether you’ve lived here for decades or you’re thinking about making Sonoma County home, here are a few things that make this time of year so special.
1. Harvest Season Is Here
September is one of the most exciting times in Wine Country. Vineyards throughout Sonoma County are busy with harvest, and you’ll often spot crews working among the vines early in the morning.
Even if you’re not a wine drinker, there’s something beautiful about driving through Sonoma County this time of year and seeing the vineyards full and ready for harvest.
2. The Best Weather of the Year
One of our local secrets? Summer doesn’t necessarily end after Labor Day.
September often brings beautiful warm afternoons and cooler evenings, making it a great month for backyard dinners, trips to the coast, hiking, and exploring our downtowns.
3. A Trip to the Sonoma Coast
When temperatures climb inland, having the Sonoma Coast practically in our backyard is hard to beat.
Bodega Bay, Doran Beach, Goat Rock Beach and Jenner all make great day trips—and the drive itself is half the fun.
4. Farmers Markets & Local Produce
Sonoma County's agricultural roots are still a huge part of what makes living here special. September is a great time to visit a farmers market or farm stand for late-summer tomatoes, peppers, apples and other locally grown favorites.
It’s also a good reminder that Wine Country is about much more than wine!
5. Small-Town Weekends
One of my favorite things about Sonoma County is how different each community feels.
You can grab breakfast in Petaluma, spend an afternoon exploring Sebastopol, walk around Healdsburg, visit a farm stand near Santa Rosa, or head north for a quiet afternoon in Cloverdale.
You don't have to travel very far to feel like you've gone somewhere completely different.
6. Fall Events Start Popping Up
September is when the local calendar starts getting especially fun. Community festivals, harvest celebrations, outdoor events and family activities begin filling the weekends, with pumpkin patches and other fall traditions right around the corner.
If you're new to the area, attending local events is also one of the best ways to get a feel for the different Sonoma County communities.
7. It’s a Great Time to Explore Where You Live
Sometimes we get so busy that we forget people travel from all over the world to experience what we have right outside our doors.
Take the scenic route. Try a restaurant you haven't been to yet. Visit a town you normally drive past. Head toward the coast for the afternoon.
